I think we all realise that riding bikes without using ear protection will eventually lead to hearing damage. That damage can range from tinnitus to partial or total hearing loss. So what can we do about it?
As motorcyclists we are subject to many different noises. Not just traffic and engine noises, but the rush of wind and the high pitch wail as it passes through the tiny gap in your visor or top vent. Wind noise on a motorbike produces noises levels up to 95db at just 60mph, permanent hearing damage can occur from 85db so it is essential to always to use hearing protection. A motorcycle creating a sound measured at 120db can be heard without running the risk of temporary or permanent damage for less than 0.234375 minutes, scary.
There are various types of ear plugs available; they range from disposable foam types, costing less than a quid to custom fit moulded ear plugs, costing around £50. Personally I have tried to use ear plugs for the last decade whenever possible, especially on longer or high speed rides. I’ve tried custom moulded plugs but found them a bit too much hassle to get in and out so I usually stick with the conventional roll in your fingers and pop them in foam types, which work quite well. I’ve recently been using these Auritech plugs instead though. The independently measured mean sound attenuation (to EN352-2:2002) of Auritech Biker Hearing Protectors is 29.6dB at the higher (most damaging) frequencies, which is very good. The plugs are nice and soft so don’t cause discomfort and they still allow the sound you need to hear to penetrate, like other traffic, the sound of your engine etc. They also stop the balance/orientation problems I sometimes get with the moulded plugs and you can hear what the cashier is saying in the garage, which is a bonus. They also come in a handy little screw top holder that can hang from your bike keys, or be shoved in a pocket.
The boring bit
Auritech Hearing Protectors are made by Appia Healthcare Limited, a UK company with 20 years experience of designing custom-fit hearing protectors. They’re claimed to be the most advanced hearing defence ever. Unlike traditional foam, wax or silicone earplugs Auritech Biker Hearing Protectors contain precision-tuned, patented ceramic filters. These ensure maximum protection from dangerous levels of engine, wind and road noise. Critically, the unique frequency-selective filtration process of Auritech Biker Hearing Protectors allows conversation, sirens and horns to remain clearly audible, without the muffling effect of conventional earplugs. Auritech filters are formed with a venture-shaped sound channel from high-grade ceramic material (zirconium oxide) at very high temperature so their internal aperture surface is perfectly smooth. This results in more precise sound attenuation than with plastic filters which have a rough, uneven channel surface.
The unique silicone-free, hypoallergenic thermoplastic outer construction of Auritech Biker Hearing Protectors makes them comfortable to wear for extended periods. They are suitable for bikers and motorsport enthusiasts of all ages and are re-usable. A cleaning kit is available, although Auritech Biker Hearing Protectors can also be washed in warm, soapy water.
